Firstly, Let me preface this post by saying there is no perfectCAD software. There are pro’s and con’s to every CAD platform.
However, as a person who has used several CAD packages over the years, I have some experience with knowing what tools/features provide advantages and disadvantages among CAD platforms.
Therefore, this post highlights some of the features, I feel, can be advantages and disadvantages within the current iteration of Autodesk Inventor.
NAVIGATION WHEEL
As a novice Autodesk Inventor user, I wasn’t aware of the capability of the Navigation Wheel.
Therefore, I did some research, reviewed some tutorials, and concluded the Navigation Wheel is completely pointless.
Now, I know there are some user’s who’ve become accustomed to the Navigation Wheel, and enjoy its capability.
However, from my experience, you can capture the same functionality of the navigation wheel with a fewmouse movements and keyboard strokes.
Additionally, when initially using the Navigation Wheel, I found it quite cumbersome; reducing my efficiency with the software.
Honestly, I would recommend most users either stick to keyboard strokes and mouse gestures or purchase a 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse Pro
Regardless of which method you choose, you’ll experience the same functionality of the Navigation Wheel, with improved efficiency.

FLAG NOTES
In my opinion, one of the tools DRASTICALLY needed and absent from Autodesk Inventor is Flag Notes.
I understand some users might express, “The software provides you with the ability to insert sketch symbols within the drawing.” That being said, those symbols are not associative.
Having the ability to utilize associative Flag Notes within the drawing reduces user errors; and allows users the ability to review a brief summary of the corresponding note.
SPELL CHECK
Truthfully, this feature is a no brainer. There is no reason, with all the iterations of the software, that Autodesk Inventor does not YET have the capability to perform a spell check.
Amongst most users, this add-in is one of the most requested. Please, for the love of all that is righteous and holy, ADD a spell check button in Autodesk Inventor 2019. Enough said!
GROUPING GD&T WITH DIMENSION
The ability or lack thereof, to group GD&T annotations to dimensions ABSOLUTELY NEEDS to be incorporated in Inventor 2019.
Being able to group annotations with dimensions, in my opinion, truly helps capture the design intent of the engineer/designer; as well as, assist users in creating a clean drawing.
INVENTOR PRESENTATION (.IPN)
What can I say about Inventor Presentation? Oh, I know, why are we STILL using it?
In most CAD softwares, the ability to create exploded views, are usually captured, as a configuration, within the assembly. Why is the process different within Inventor?
I understand that Inventor Presentation (.ipn) has been a staple within the software.
However, that doesn’t negate the fact that none of the other Heavy Hitters, within the 3D-CAD community, (Solidworks, CREO, NX), utilize this technique-of having an entirely separate file for exploded views.
In my humble opinion, I believe Autodesk Inventor NEEDS an overhaul of the software, completely obsoleting the .ipn functionality within Inventor, and merge .ion into the assembly.
I believe obsoleting the .ipn functionality would: a.) decrease drawing file size, and b.) assist in easing the transition, with other CAD users, from competing CAD platforms.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Although, I have been a little critical with the current iteration of Autodesk Inventor, Overall, I believe the software to be quite solid.
To be honest, Autodesk is my second favorite CAD platform, behind Solidworks.
I believe if Autodesk can continue to listen to its users and incorporate their feedback, they will see a continual uptick in subscriptions.
If you’ve enjoyed my post or have an opinion on other updates you would like to see in future iterations of Autodesk Inventor, please feel free to leave a comment.
Thank you and always “May the WORKS be with you!”
